Hundreds line up to get info, make deals to avoid water shut-offs in Detroit

DETROIT – The city of Detroit is making deals with hundreds of people who fear their water will stop if they don’t catch up with overdue bills.

People waited in line Saturday to discuss payment plans with the water department. The city stopped cutting off water July 21, but that moratorium is supposed to end in a few days.

Customer service manager Constance Williams tells The Detroit News (http://bit.ly/1uU0UQF) that the city is willing to accept 10 per cent down if customers agree to a payment plan. Williams says, “We do care.”

Vernita Turner says she owes $1,800 and wants to keep the water flowing.

Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr has turned the water department over to Mayor Mike Duggan, who says he’s sensitive to criticism about the aggressive shut-off policy.
