Warrant: Florida mom who left baby in car waited to get help

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A Florida woman is accused of leaving her toddler in a hot car for more than eight hours and waiting before driving him to a hospital.

News outlets report 34-year-old Emily Bird surrendered to police Wednesday and was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

The Miami Herald reports Bird told police she thought she had dropped off 17-month-old Eli Bird at day care before work. She said she later drove to the centre, which said Eli wasn’t there.

A search warrant says she then gathered Eli’s belongings from the centre, sat in her car for several minutes and refused to look at Eli, who was buckled into his car seat. She then drove to a hospital.

Bird’s attorney, Lawrence Hashish, says the charge is surprising.
