FLOWOOD, Miss. – A Mississippi man shot by a police officer last month has filed a federal lawsuit.
WLBT-TV reports the suit was filed Wednesday against the city of Flowood and others, including the police chief and the state of Mississippi. In it, Kenara Vonzell McDavid says the officer used excessive force.
McDavid says he was in his car in a supermarket parking lot when an officer summoned by a store employee approached. McDavid says the officer pointed a gun when he started his car and shot him before he drove away, crashing in a ditch.
His attorney, Dow Yoder, says at least nine rounds were fired, six striking McDavid.
Flowood Police Chief Richie McCluskey told WLBT-TV it was “premature to respond.” He previously said McDavid was trying to run over the officer.
