Albanian police find big cache of weapons, arrest 2

TIRANA, Albania – Albanian police say they have arrested two people and sequestered a big cache of weapons they believe were destined to be sold both in the country and abroad.

A police statement Saturday said raids on 24 houses in the capital, Tirana, and in Korca, 170 kilometres (105 miles) to the southeast, had found dozens of boxes with explosives, hundreds of grenades and launchers, thousands of rounds of ammunition, many heavy machine-guns, mortars, and other weaponry.

Police said an ongoing investigation is trying to find the sources of the weapons and their eventual destinations.

The two arrested people are accused of illegal weapon possession and trafficking in weapons and ammunition, charges that could get them up to 50 years in jail if proven.
