Raphael Assuncao to fight Bryan Carraway in Halifax on UFC televised card

TORONTO – Third-ranked bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao will take on No. 8 Bryan Caraway on the UFC’s televised card in Halifax in October.

The Oct. 4 show at the Metro Centre will also feature a women’s strawweight bout between newcomers Paige VanZant and Kailin Curran.

The previously announced main event is a five-round welterweight bout between Canadian Rory (Ares) MacDonald and Tarec Saffiedine. MacDonald (17-2) is ranked second among 170-pound contenders while Saffiedine (15-3) is No. 10.

Assuncao (21-4) is on a six-fight winning streak that includes a win over current champion T.J. Dillashaw in October 2013. He has not lost since a first-round knockout at the hands of Erik Koch at UFC 128 in March 2011.

Caraway (19-7) has won five of his last six, all by submission.

The 20-year-old VanZant (3-1) will become the UFC’s youngest female fighter when she debuts in October.

Curran has won all three of her pro fights.
