Quebec prisoner faces charges after escaping from Montreal-area facility

LAVAL, Que. – A convicted murderer who was captured after five days on the lam has been charged in connection with his breakout from a Montreal-area facility.
Robert Gaudette appeared in court in Laval today and faces charges of escaping from lawful custody and forcibly breaking out of a cell.
He did not enter a plea and is to return to court on Aug. 14.
The 55-year-old Gaudette was arrested without incident last Sunday on a downtown Quebec City sidewalk. He had fled the minimum-security Federal Training Centre in Laval five days earlier, with sources saying he hopped out of a window in his room.
He had been behind bars since receiving a life sentence in 2002 for the second-degree murder of his wife, Cindy Bouchard.
Gaudette was set to have a parole hearing soon.
