Kelowna developer has a hit on iTunes

KELOWNA – They spotted the demand and filled it. Kelowna software developer Mathtoons Media saw there was a need for apps that help develop English skills so they came up with one that has proven to be a hit.

Grammer Fun!! is a free quiz game that helps high school and college students improve their English.

The app was featured by Apple's iTunes as one of the Best New Apps in education. In two week, its popularity grew by 700 per cent. The app is also available on Google Play.

“We’re thrilled with our rapid growth,” CEO Kristin Garn said.

Garn thinks the app’s surprising and offbeat humour is part of the reason for its success.

“We decided to stray from the usual academic path and added a lot of jokes and animation to liven it up for kids who need some grammar practice.”

The app is big in Indonesia, India and Brazil.

Usually iTune educational apps are aimed at young kids, but Mathoons’ software is for high school and college aged students.

Garn figures the market is only going to grow as classrooms adopt more iPads and allow students to use their own handheld devices in class.
