Man accused in physician beating to undergo psych evaluation
PENTICTON – Gregory Stanley Nield appeared in Penticton court Tuesday after being charged with assault causing bodily harm and aggravated assault.
The charges stem from an incident at Penticton Regional Hospital on Dec. 5 after a doctor on duty in the hospital’s psychiatric ward was attacked. The doctor suffered a broken jaw and other facial injuries in the incident.
Crown Prosecutor Mallory Treddenick asked judge Gale Sinclair for a 30 day psychiatric remand, to take place at Port Coquitlam’s Forensic Psychiatric Institute. Nield will be evaluated as to whether or not he was criminally responsible due to a mental disorder.
Treddenick offered Judge Sinclair a letter from Penticton Regional Hospital, supporting Crown’s position.
Defence lawyer Erik Lund said he “was not opposed” to the request, adding the accused apologized to the court for his appearance.
Neild was remanded to the Forensic Psychiatric Institute for 30 days. His next court appearance will be in Penticton on July 7, 2015.
