World leaders, mourners gather in Ghanaian capital for President John Atta Mills’ funeral

ACCRA, Ghana – World leaders and mourners are gathering for the funeral of Ghana’s late president.

John Atta Mills died last month at the age of 68, five months before he was due to stand for re-election. On Friday, Ghanaians paid their respects as his body lay in state.

Among the dignitaries expected to attend the funeral is U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The country’s vice-president, John Mahama, is finishing Atta Mills’ term. In December, Mahama is expected to face the second-place finisher from the 2008 election, which was the closest in the country’s history.

Ghana is regarded as one of the most mature democracies in West Africa, having held two successive handovers of power following elections.
