Source: Calgary Stampeders place NFL receiver Gordon on their negotiation list
The Calgary Stampeders are taking a flyer on NFL receiver Josh Gordon.
A league source says the Stampeders put Gordon on their negotiation list Thursday, giving the CFL team exclusive negotiating rights to the Cleveland Browns receiver.
Gordon has been suspended for the entire 2014 NFL season after testing positive for marijuana. On Wednesday, the suspension was upheld by an arbitrator.
On Thursday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported via Twitter that Gordon was considering playing the remainder of the CFL season.
Under CFL rules, a player who is suspended by the NFL is not eligible to play in Canada. However, if the Browns released Gordon he would no longer be under contract in the NFL and would be able to sign with the Stampeders.
Gordon, 23, registered a NFL-high 1,646 receiving yards last year despite serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. The failed test for marijuana was his second offence, resulting in the season-long suspension.
