Montreal forward Marco Di Vaio clear to finish season with Impact
MONTREAL – Montreal Impact striker Marco Di Vaio was acquitted Friday in a match-fixing case in his native Italy.
Montreal’s star player can now return to finish the season with Montreal after the disciplinary commission of the Italian Football Federation acquited him.
The 36-year-old Di Vaio was accused of concealing facts about a match-fixing scheme during a match between Bologna and Bari last year. Di Vaio was the captain of Bologna F.C., where he played before being acquired as a designated player by Montreal.
Di Vaio took to Twitter to celebrate the ruling that cleared him.
“Finally! I’m so happy! Now back with so much enthusiasm to my new adventure with my team the Montreal Impact! Thank you all for the support!,” Di Vaio tweeted.
Juventus coach Antonio Conte was suspended for 10 months by the disciplinary commission of the Italian Football Federation. He was penalized for not denouncing two match-fixing deals he knew about in the 2010-11 season when he was the coach at Siena.
