Kal Rotary celebrate three years of their Starfish Pack program
VERNON – The Kalamalka Rotary club is celebrating the third year of its Starfish Pack program, which provides more than 90 school children in the Vernon area with a backpack full of food for the weekend.
Kal Rotary partnered with Okanagan Boys and Girls Club and Save-On Foods in 2016 in an aim to address food insecurity and started providing 20 backpacks containing two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, as well as fresh fruit and snacks to over 20 children in School District 22.
"Our goal is to ensure no child goes hungry in Greater Vernon. We’ve made a great start, but there are more schools and children who need our help," Kalamalka Rotary Starfish Pack Program chair Carmen Larsen said in a media release.
“The Starfish Pack program has been extremely successful thanks to the involvement and donations from a number of individuals, businesses and organizations. Salvation Army is a big supporter and provides warehouse space and Sun FM helps raise funds by sponsoring the spring media campaign,” Larsen said.
Kal Rotary recently championed Great West Equipment, Tolko, and Bannister Automotive Group for the significant contribution of more than 10 backpacks a year.
The Rotary club has also just kicked off its fundraising drive for the coming school year. A backpack costs $525 per child for the school year, with each weekend backpack costing $15.
