Sewage leak into popular Adirondack lake halted by repairs

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Public works crews have repaired a leak in an old pipe that was sending sewage into the lake in the middle of a popular Adirondack tourist destination.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/2fTLex1 ) that officials in the village of Lake Placid recently were alerted to the leak by a member of the Mirror Lake Watershed Association.

The source of the leak was traced to a hole in an old, unused pipe within the more than 100-year-old sewer line underneath the village’s Main Street. The leak had allowed sewage to flow into Mirror Lake near the Mirror Lake Inn and High Peaks Resort, on the lake’s northwest shore.

Local environmentalists deemed it a “relatively small leak.”

State health officials are testing Mirror Lake’s water quality.

Most of the lake is surrounded by the village.
