Grandmother charged after Detroit teen killed in shooting

DETROIT – A Detroit grandmother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after her gun was used in an accidental shooting that killed a teenager who was off from school because of a snow day.

Lise Cox was at work and had no direct role in the death of the 13-year-old boy Monday. But the prosecutor’s office says she failed to properly store the gun and was aware that her grandsons knew where to find the weapon. The victim, Emarjae Watkins, was shot in the back by another boy and died.

The 58-year-old Cox heard the charges in court Wednesday. A not-guilty plea was entered by the judge. She didn’t have a lawyer at the arraignment.

A 13-year-old boy accused of firing the gun is being charged in juvenile court.
