Montreal documentarian calls reviews of taxation film ‘miraculous’

TORONTO – During the 2 1/2 years Montreal-raised Harold Crooks spent making his new documentary, “The Price We Pay,” he had an ideal audience in mind.

He wanted to catch the attention of programmers at the Toronto International Film Festival.

When he found out in the summer that his film had been selected for the fest, Crooks felt as if he’d “come out of open-heart surgery successfully.”

Set to open in the spring, “The Price We Pay” looks at the impact of off-shore tax havens and the impact of the “cloud economy.”

New York-based Crooks, whose previous documentary “Surviving Progress” also screened at the fest, calls it “miraculous” that reviewers are saying he has made taxation a compelling story.

The Toronto International Film Festival wraps Sunday.
