RCMP charge teacher in Nunavut with sex offences against eight students

SANIKILUAQ, Nunavut – A teacher in Nunavut has been charged with sexual offences at the school where he taught going back to 1984.

RCMP say Johnny Meeko, who is 58, faces 29 charges involving eight separate victims in Sanikiluaq (SAHN’-ih-KILL’-oo-ack)

The offences are alleged to have occurred between 1984 and 2006.

Police say Meeko has been a teacher at the elementary school in Sanikiluaq since 1973 at that all of the alleged offences occurred at the school.

The community is on the Belcher Islands in the southeastern area of Hudson Bay.

Police say the investigation began with a complaint from someone in the community last month.
