Six signs its Christmas time in Penticton

PENTICTON – There are six signs the Christmas season is upon us in Penticton.

1 – It’s not really Christmas in Penticton until you see the SS Sicamous decked out in Christmas lights, not just the standard lighting we are used to throughout the year. It’s worth a look, down at the waterfront at the foot of Lakeshore Drive.

2 – Salvation Army kettles pop up everywhere.

3 – If you find you’ve been wheeling around and around the mall parking lot trying to find a space, well, that too is a sure sign the Christmas season is here.

4 – Santa is at the mall. Say no more.

5 – Every year it seems as though on the evening of the Christmas parade, there is a cool, damp wind coming off Okanagan Lake, whistling down Main Street, right into the path of the parade route. This year was no exception, but just like other years, the wind failed to deter hundreds from coming out to get into the spirit of the Christmas season.

6 – If you come out of the casino at the Coast Lakeside and find yourself wondering what happened to the night outside, (because there’s so much light in front of the hotel), well, that’s another sure sign it's Christmas time in Penticton.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
