MASON, Ohio – Andy Murray lost in straight sets to Jeremy Chardy of France, an opponent he has dominated during his career, in the third round of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday.
Chardy beat Murray 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. Murray had won their four previous matches, losing only one set.
Murray won an Olympic gold medal at Wimbledon, then dropped out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week with a sore left knee. He said the knee felt good in his opening match on Wednesday.
Serena Williams reached the quarterfinals on Thursday and extended her winning streak to 19 matches. Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 5 Angelique Kerber also won.
Mardy Fish and Juan Mardin del Potro also advanced.
