Montreal won’t remove storied artist Guido Nincheri’s name from park

MONTREAL – After outcry from the Italian community, Montreal’s mayor has announced the city won’t rename Guido Nincheri Park.

Denis Coderre said Monday the east-end Montreal park will keep the name of the late local artist, who was Canadian-Italian.

The park was slated to be renamed after Quebec City as it will display several statues the provincial capital is gifting to Montreal for its 375th birthday.

Coderre made the announcement after discussing with Nincheri’s grandson, Roger, and decided to keep the name as is.

The Montreal Italian community had voiced its displeasure in recent days and said the city showed a lack of respect to an artist once described as the “Michelangelo of Montreal”for his stunning frescoes and stained glass works displayed in churches across North America.

Coderre said the Quebec gifts will still be on display at the park.
