Today on the Hill: Ottawa reflects on deadly bus crash of one year ago

OTTAWA – Bus drivers and the families and friends of six people killed on this day last year will pay tribute today to the victims of a horrific collision involving an OC Transpo double-decker bus and a Via Rail passenger train.

The driver and five passengers died and several others were injured when the bus crossed a flashing guard rail and smashed into the oncoming train.

Investigators say they’ll have an interim report on the crash next week.

Here are some other events happening today in and around Ottawa:

— Two weeks of public consultations on the future of the television broadcast industry are into the final stretch, with the CRTC hearing today from 15 stakeholder groups on the second-last day of hearings. Presenters include Fairchild TV, Channel Zero and Unifor;

— University of Saskatchewan professor Jim Miller talks about the relationship between the federal government and Canada’s aboriginal people at a breakfast forum;

— Gov. Gen. David Johnston will preside over a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry regiment;

— And Statistics Canada keeps the markets informed with releases on employment insurance claims for July and Canada’s international securities transactions for the month.
