Toronto FC goalkeeper Joe Bendik wins MLS save of the week honours

TORONTO – Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik has won MLS save of the week honours for his double stop on a penalty kick against the Chicago Fire last Saturday.

First Bendik stopped Jeff Larentowicz’s penalty kick and then blocked Quincy Amarikwa’s shot off the rebound.

In fan voting, the Toronto ‘keeper (31.63 per cent) edged New York Red Bulls goalie Luis Robles (30.79). San Jose’s Jon Busch was third (26.71), ahead of Vancouver’s David Ousted (5.80) and Montreal’sEvan Bush (5.07).

The award is Bendik’s first of the season and second by a Toronto FC player. Brazilian Julio Cesar won the award in Week 7.

Lamar Neagle of the Seattle Sounders won the Goal of the Week award for his strike in a 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake.

In other news, a league spokesman says the review of Toronto FC midfielder Michael Bradley’s critical post-game comments on Canadian referee David Gantar’s performance last weekend is ongoing.

Commissioner Don Garber said Thursday that Gantar erred in denying Toronto a goal in the 90th minute but that the league was reviewing what Bradley said.
