Weather alerts ended, but rain still expected in South Thompson and Okanagan

KELOWNA – Weather alerts for the South Thompson and Okanagan valleys ended overnight, but rain is still expected across the region today and tomorrow.

Environment Canada meteorologist Louis Kohanyi says lower amounts of rainfall are now forecast for the two valleys, but weather alerts for heavy rainfall are still up for the Fraser canyon, Nicola and Similkameen valleys today, May 24.

Kamloops can expect showers beginning near noon and the chance of thunderstorms today, with five to 10 mm of rain expected. Winds are expected to be northwest at 30 km/h, with a high of 23 Celsius.

Unsettled conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and risk of a thunderstorm before skies should clear on Sunday.

In the Okanagan, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton should see showers begin around noon today, with five to 10 mm of rain expected. The daytime high should reach a high of 20 Celsius in Vernon and Kelowna, and 19 C in Penticton.

Penticton could see another five to 10 mm of rain overnight, and an additional five to 10 mm on Saturday.

Vernon and Kelowna can expect a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight Friday through Saturday, with a risk of a thunderstorm.

Saturday’s highs are expected to reach 17 C in Vernon and Kelowna, and 19 C in Penticton.

A 30 per cent chance of showers with a high of 24 C is expected for Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton on Sunday.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014.
