Man who had cocaine mailed to Rhode Island gets prison time
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Providence man who brought cocaine from Puerto Rico to Rhode Island through the U.S. Postal Service has been sentenced to a year in prison.
Federal prosecutors said Monday that 45-year-old Eliot Figueroa-Rosario was also sentenced to three years of probation and will forfeit $32,500 seized by law enforcement.
He pleaded guilty in December to attempted possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
Authorities say in addition, Figueroa-Rosario shipped large sums of cash to a cocaine distributor in Puerto Rico.
He was captured on video surveillance shipping two parcels to Puerto Rico from the U.S. Postal Service processing centre in Providence. A court-authorized search of the packages found them to contain $16,000 and $26,000 respectively.
