TORONTO – Jay Triano is returning to the helm of the Canadian men’s basketball team.
He has been named the new head coach of the squad.
Triano also was the team’s head coach from 1998 to 2004, leading the team to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
NBA star Steve Nash, general manager of the Canadian team, says Triano is a “confirmed and respected leader” in the basketball community.
The 53-year-old Triano was the first Canadian-born and Canadian-trained coach in the NBA when he joined the Toronto Raptors in 2002 as an assistant.
The Niagara Falls, Ont., native was named Raptors head coach during the 2008-09 season.
Triano’s assistants will be Greg Francis, Kelvin Sampson and Dave Smart.
