Germany’s Merkel and France’s Hollande: Greece must keep pursuing key economic reforms

BERLIN – The leaders of Germany and France are stressing that it’s up to Greece to keep pursuing painful reforms as it strives to keep its place in the euro.
Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Francois Hollande were meeting Thursday before both hold talks over the next two days with Greece’s new prime minister, Antonis Samaras.
Merkel says it’s important for everyone to keep to the commitments they have made and she will “encourage” Greece to pursue reforms.
Hollande stressed that he wants Greece to remain in the 17-nation euro and it’s up to Athens to make the “indispensable efforts” to ensure that.
In brief statements before their sensitive meeting, neither leader mentioned Greece’s hopes of winning more time to carry out reforms and spending cuts.
