Mother, daughter destroy sculpture at exhibit opening

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Museum officials say a mother and daughter who were viewing an exhibit featuring children’s playthings transformed into art destroyed a sculpture 10 minutes into the grand opening.

PennLive.com reports the women damaged the exhibit’s main piece, called “Fair and Square,” at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg Aug. 17. The sculpture featured a life-sized swing set that was welded to resemble the scales of justice.

Museum director Anne Schwab says the women thought they could play on the swings and pulled them down.

Schwab says she’d told the women they could not touch the art.

Artist Sean Matthews says his piece, which took him two years to create, was insured for $5,000. He’s waiting to see if he’ll be reimbursed.

It’s unclear if the women will pay for the damage.
