Wildfire west of Kamloops now ‘being held’

SAVONA — The 200 hectare Sabiston Creek wildfire that ignited west of Kamloops two days ago is now being held, according to B.C. Wildfire Service.

The wildfire sparked in dry grass and sage was spotted on Wednesday, June 5, along the Trans-Canada Highway just west of the small community of Savona, outside of Kamloops.

Fire information officer Marla Catherall says the wildfire is not expected to spread beyond its current boundaries. There are currently 20 firefighters on scene today, June 7.

"We did some small scale burn outs yesterday to get rid of the pockets in the middle between the fire's edge and the control line of unburnt fuel, that way it wouldn't ignite at a later date," she says.

Catherall adds the cooler temperatures along with precipitation has played an important factor in suppression efforts.
