NEW YORK, N.Y. – Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Fernandez has been named Major League Soccer’s player of the week.
Fernandez scored both goals in Vancouver’s 2-0 win over FC Dallas on Saturday, helping keep his team’s playoff hopes alive.
He gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when he met midfielder Mauro Rosales’s cross with a header that went into the top-left corner of the Dallas goal.
He put Vancouver up 2-0 four minutes later, once again joining forces with Rosales.
Rosales stole the ball near the midfield line then sent a pass to Fernandez, who controlled the ball in the penalty area with one touch before sending a shot past Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.
The Whitecaps are currently in fifth place in the MLS Western Conference, one point ahead of the Portland Timbers. The top five teams advance to the playoffs.
Vancouver’s next game is Friday night in Seattle against the conference-leading Sounders.
