Prosecutors drop murder charge after Logan Lake suspect dies

LOGAN LAKE — A man charged with murder in connection to a Logan Lake homicide has died weeks before his trial was set to begin.

Gordon James Fleming, born 1951, died last Friday, June 7, after a battle with cancer, according to his lawyer Brad Smith.

Fleming was charged with the second degree murder of David Fast in the small community of Logan Lake, approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Kamloops.

Smith says his client was anxious about bringing his matter to trial.

Lawyers had secured trial days for July and August, which was significantly sooner than what would be usual in a murder trial schedule.

Since the accused has died before the trial, Crown counsel will terminate the charge as there is no one left to prosecute.

“Mr. Fleming’s narrative unfortunately will not be heard in a court of law and it’s an unfortunate end to what was a very difficult chapter in his life," Smith says. "So, no winners in this situation I'm afraid."

Fleming was charged in March 2018 after a 55-year-old man was found unresponsive at a Logan Lake Motel.

RCMP said two men were known to each other.
