Bond set for 1 of 3 Afghan officers accused of leaving training exercise to seek asylum
BATAVIA, N.Y. – An immigration judge has set a $25,000 bond for the release of one of three Afghan military officers accused of leaving a Massachusetts training exercise to seek asylum in Canada.
All three soldiers appeared Wednesday inside the federal detention facility near Buffalo, New York, where they are being held on immigration violations and facing deportation.
Their attorney, Matthew Borowski, asked for bond for Maj. Jan Arash but sought additional time before moving forward with the cases of the two other men.
Borowski is challenging the government’s contention that the three officers should be returned to Afghanistan because their visas are no longer valid. The lawyer has begun raising money online for their legal and living expenses.
U.S. authorities say there’s no evidence the men pose a public threat.
