Lake to lake cycling route to be unveiled to city council

PENTICTON – A long awaited cycling route connecting Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake through Penticton will take a big turn at next week’s council meeting.

City staff will present a plan to identify an “all ages and abilities’ cycling route to Penticton City Council at the June 18 regular council meeting.

A safe and convenient cycling route through the city has been identified as a priority for the city since the 2012 cycling plan update.

This year’s budget includes $35,000 to complete the plan.

The route would form a spine for the city’s cycling network with the aim of creating a safe route for all ages and abilities to cycle to many of the city’s amenities and destinations, in addition to connecting to the Kettle Valley Railway trails.

City Engineer Ian Chapman says some compromises in parking and traffic lanes may be impacted in some sections of the city.

“Our plan is to try to minimize etc impact through creative design and we look forward to working with citizens on solutions,” he says.

The city is planning bailouts, a survey, and open houses to involve the community in the plan’s development, according to a City of Penticton press release issued today, June 14.

Information will be shared through the city’s shapeyourcitypenticton.ca website, and anyone wanting to participate is encouraged to register on the site to receive up to date information directly.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
