TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (12,009.90 down 38.92points):
Baja Mining Corp.(TSX:BAJ). Miner. Up half a cent, or 76.92 per cent, at 11.5 cents on 7,429,130 shares. The Vancouver-based miner said that a Korean consortium has contributed US$90 million to its subsidiary Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo, allowing for the consortium to own a majority interest on the subsidiary.
Intertape Polymer Group Inc. (TSX:ITP). Paper and tapes producer. Down 80 cents, or 10.08 per cent, at $7.14 on 6,086.988 shares.
Tethys Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:TPL). Oil and gas. Down two cents, or 3.45 per cent, at 56 cents on 5,381,100 shares. Rockwood Holdings Inc. announced last week that it will buy the Australia-based company for $724 million.
Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Down seven cents, or 0.50 per cent, at $13.96 on 4,992,719 shares. The energy sector closed down 1.34 points, or 0.52 per cent, at 256.19 points.
Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY). Bank. Up 26 cents, or 0.48 per cent, at $54.17 on 3,924,950 shares. The financial sector was the lone advancer on the main index, up 0.39 point or 0.22 per cent to 176.97 points, boosted by solid third-quarter earnings from Scotiabank and Bank of Montreal. Royal Bank, which is Canada’s largest bank, will report its earnings on Thursday.
TSX Venture Exchange (1,241.88 down 4.94 points):
Intertainment Media Inc. (TSXV:INT). Marketing services. Down 1.5 cents, or 6.82 per cent, at 20.5 cents on 16,547,500 shares.
Zodiac Exploration Inc. (TSXV:ZEX). Oil and gas services. Up half a cent, or 11.11 per cent, at five cents on 7,868,963 shares.
Companies reporting major news:
The Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO). Bank. Up 23 cents, or 0.40 per cent, at $57.93 on 3,096,846 shares. The bank raised its dividend by two cents to 72 cents per share, marking its first increase since 2007. Third-quarter net income increased by 37 per cent while revenue improved to $3.88 billion from $3.32 billion.
Scotiabank (TSX:BNS). Bank. Down four cents, or 0.08 per cent, at $52.90 on 2,531,092 shares. Canada’s most international bank raised its dividend by two cents to 57 cents per share. Third-quarter profits grew by 57 per cent, boosted by the sale of its headquarters in Toronto and improved performance at several divisions. Revenue totalled $5.51 billion, up from $4.3 billion.
Yellow Media Inc. (TSX:YLO). Directory publisher. Unchanged at 5.5 cents on 1,549,561 shares. The Montreal-based company threatened to reduce almost $2 billion of debt through creditor protection if a recapitalization plan designed to give it breathing room to realign its business is rejected at a special meeting next week.
