Judge extends order blocking Ohio’s Planned Parenthood law
CINCINNATI – A federal judge is keeping an Ohio law diverting public money from Planned Parenthood from taking effect.
An order from U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett on Tuesday puts the law on hold until Aug. 12 while he weighs a dispute over the legislation. The law was set to take effect in May.
Planned Parenthood challenged the law, saying it violates the organization’s constitutional rights by denying the funds “in retaliation for” providing abortions.
The legislation targets money that Planned Parenthood gets through Ohio’s health department. That money is mostly federal and supports initiatives that provide HIV tests, cancer screenings and other prevention services.
The law bars such funds from going to entities that perform or promote abortions.
Barrett is weighing the merits after hearing arguments earlier Tuesday in Cincinnati court.
