The new way to put up Christmas lights in Vernon? Hire someone

VERNON – At age 10, Nicholas Moffat was helping his mom with the magical and much anticipated Christmas display at Art Knapps, something they began planning three months ahead of time.

Now, many years later with kids of his own, the businessman has found a way to keep doing what he loves. The only difference? He’s the boss now.

He owns and operates Nicholas Alexander Landscaping, and this year, added a new service: Christmas light installations.

“I kind of went back to what I used to do,” Moffat says.

It's caught on quick with businesses and residents alike. Moffat says many people aren’t comfortable climbing ladders to hang Christmas lights, and he’s there to ensure they still get to display some holiday decor. The crew can either install your own lights, or buy them for you.

“Whatever you can imagine, whatever they want to see, we can create it,” he says.

The best part for those of us who get tangled up in Christmas lights every year is they take the installation down, wrap up your lights, and label them by tree, shrub or window pane to make things easier next year. That’s a Christmas gift all on its own.

Moffat says the biggest trends right now are accentuating roof lines and peaks, and twining lights around trees to highlight branches. White lights are proving most popular, followed by blue lights, and then multi-coloured.

The installation service brought Moffat’s landscaping business an extended season this year, but he says the best part is getting to flip on the lights and see the display come to life.

“It puts you in the spirit really quick. I just like the look on their faces when they see it at night. I like knowing that it’s something they, and people driving around, will enjoy.”
