Looks like it’s going to be a big year for excessive speeding

VERNON – Police have nabbed almost as many excessive speeders in the past six months as they did in all of last year.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says 22 drivers have been caught speeding excessively in the North Okanagan so far this year, compared to a total of 25 in 2013.

“B.C.'s speeding law compels police to impound vehicles that are traveling more than 40 km/h over the posted limit,” Molendyk says.

The offense also carries a fine ranging from $368 to $483 depending on the speed.

Last Wednesday, two novice drivers were handed the mandatory seven day vehicle impound notice and excessive speeding fine. One was driving 148km/h in a 90 km/h zone in rainy conditions, while the other, a motorcyclist was traveling 170km/h in a 90km/h zone.

“Patrols targeting high risk driving behavior will continue by our traffic unit,” Molendyk says.
