US reporting first death due to new swine flu; no person-to-person spread seen

Public health officials in the United States are reporting the first known death due to infection with the new flu virus that has been jumping from pigs to people there.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says the death occurred in Ohio, in an older person who had direct exposure to pigs.
The CDC says the person had multiple health problems, which can raise an individual’s risk of suffering from severe influenza if he or she is infected.
The CDC is also reporting an additional 12 human cases of H3N2-variant flu, bringing the total since last July to 288.
The CDC says to date it appears that the virus isn’t spreading from person to person.
Ten U.S. states have reported human cases, but so far no other country has reported seeing this virus, either in pigs or in people.
