Stephen Harper, Australian PM Abbott discuss global security in latest call

OTTAWA – The prime minister continues to touch base with other world leaders committed to military action in Iraq.

Stephen Harper’s office says he spoke with Prime Minister Tony Abbott of Australia last night.

Harper’s office says during the call, the prime minister stressed the importance of the coalition working to degrade the power of extremists in Iraq.

Australia’s government has deployed a military mission to Iraq made up of fighter jets, special forces advisers and surveillance planes — nearly identical to Canada’s contribution.

The Australian prime minister also expressed his condolences for the death of a Canadian soldier earlier this week in Quebec.

Harper and Abbott will next meet at the APEC and G20 summits in November.
