Vernon family issues plea for thieves to return stolen necklace containing son ashes

VERNON – A Vernon family is desperate to be reunited with a necklace containing the ashes of their son after it was stolen from their vehicle.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the family's vehicle was broken into sometime overnight June 23 when it was parked at the 3800 block of 21 Avenue in Vernon. The family reported the theft of the necklace to the RCMP on June 24.

The necklace, which holds great sentimental value and contains the ashes of their deceased son is described as silver in colour and features one large cross with a small cross dangling from an overlay of small diamonds that are in a V shape.

"The family is hoping that someone will recognize the necklace and have it in themselves to come forward and reunite the family with one of the only pieces they have left of their son," RCMP Const. Kelly Brett said in the release. "It is possible the thief does not know that the necklace contains something so important. This is their chance to do something positive and return the item to police."

If anyone has any information about the necklace they are asked to contact the RCMP at 250-545-7171 and reference file 2019-12811 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.okscrimestoppers.com.

The necklace can also be returned to the City of Vernon Community Safety Unit located at 3010 31 Ave, Vernon.
