Brooklyn Museum plans Basquiat show featuring notebooks filled with text, sketches
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Brooklyn Museum plans an exhibition on graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (zhahn mee-SHEHL’ BAH’-skee-aht) that includes eight rarely seen notebooks filled with his handwritten texts and sketches.
“Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks” will run at the Brooklyn Museum from April 3 through Aug. 23.
It’ll feature 160 unbound notebook pages and 30 related paintings, drawings and mixed media works.
The material comes from private collections and the Brooklyn-born artist’s estate.
Basquiat had his start on the streets of New York. His first public exhibition was in 1980. One of his paintings sold at auction for $23.7 million last year.
The notebooks come from the collection of Larry Warsh. He previously served as a member of the Basquiat authentication committee.
Basquiat died in 1988 of a drug overdose at age 27.
