Jimmy Carter painting helps set fundraising record

ATLANTA – The human rights organization founded by Jimmy Carter says this year’s event raised a record-breaking $3.7 million.

Officials with The Carter Center say the total is more than double the amount raised in any previous auction. An oil painting by the former president received the event’s highest bid of $750,000.

The auction was part a four-day retreat in Annapolis, Maryland.

The annual event raises money for The Carter Center to monitor elections, treat diseases and other work. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, formed the Atlanta-based organization in 1982.
