KELOWNA – Plastic Free July is a green initiative that originated in Perth, Australia and this month it’s making waves in Kelowna.
The goal of the initiative is to encourage as many people as possible to refrain from using single-use plastics for the month of July in order to create better, more environmentally conscious habits in the long term.
The initiative's Instagram page @plasticfreejuly_kelowna is a hub of information on the plastic-free movement in the community. The page provides tips for eliminating plastic and how to find alternative products in Kelowna.
Farm Bound, the Okanagan’s first zero-waste grocery store, has partnered with the initiative.
Many other local businesses have also pledged to join the challenge this month.
Bulk Barn usually offers customers a 10 per cent discount on Wednesdays if they bring their own container, but have now extended this offer for all of July.
Ambience Café will be giving customers a 10 per cent discount when they bring a reusable cup, and the same goes for Sprout Bread Shop and Pulp Fiction.
Oranj Kelowna will offer 10 per cent off to their customers who purchase a smoothie and bring a reusable cup this month.
This month Naked Cafe will offer the same discount not only for reusable cups but reusable takeaway containers as well.
Public Liquor is not only ditching plastic bags for cardboard boxes this month but if customers bring their own bag for their liquor they will receive a five per cent discount.
The Salty Caramel Kitchen is giving coffee away for one dollar only for customers with reusable cups and offering a dollar off any drink with a reusable cup.
Bliss Bakery on Ellis and Bean Scene’s six locations have also partnered with the initiative to raise awareness about plastic-free July.
Plastic Free Kelowna is offering stamp cards which can be stamped at any of the partnering businesses when you bring a reusable container, Once the 10 spaces have been stamped, you are eligible for a 10 per cent discount at Farm Bound and are entered to win a gift basket of plastic-free, local products.
