U Sports Roundup: McMaster and Carleton advance to OUA semifinals

Quarterback Asher Hastings threw for 317 yards and a touchdown as the No. 4 McMaster Marauders came away with a 17-11 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday in U Sports playoff football action.

The win sets up an Ontario University Athletics semifinal matchup with the No. 6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks next Saturday.

McMaster trailed 11-7 in the fourth quarter and took its only lead of the game with 7:20 left to play when Hastings found Dan Petermann in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown reception.

After a failed Gryphon drive, Marauder kicker Adam Preocanin hit a 23-yard field goal to make the score 17-11 with 2:32 left to play.

Guelph quarterback James Roberts threw for 257 yards, one touchdown and an interception. A’dre Fraser was the game’s top receiver, hauling in 93 yards on seven receptions, while scoring Guelph’s only touchdown in the game.

In Saturday’s other OUA quarter-final matchup, the No. 8 Carleton Ravens hammered the Ottawa Gee-Gees 45-9.

The Ravens will play the No. 1 Western Mustangs next Saturday in the semifinals.

The OUA was the first conference to start its post-season, with Canada’s other three wrapping up their regular seasons this weekend and playoffs beginning next Saturday.

MONTREAL — Kicker Felix Menard connected on all three of his field goal attempts and the No. 2 Carabins (7-1) added two team safeties in a shutout of McGill (4-4).

SHERBROOKE, Que. — QB Hugo Richard threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Felix Faubert-Lussier and rushed in another on his own to lift No. 1 Laval (7-1) over the Vert et Or (3-5).
