The Latest: Family pleased grand jury to consider shooting

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Latest on the case of a former police officer who fatally shot a legally armed musician who was waiting on the side of the road for a tow truck (all times EDT):

Family members of a black musician who was fatally shot along an interstate say they’re pleased that the former police officer will face a grand jury.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said during a news conference Wednesday that his office would send former Palm Beach Gardens officer Nouman Raja’s case to the grand jury.

Corey Jones after he had left a gig before dawn Oct. 18 when his SUV broke down. He was standing near it when Raja stopped in an unmarked car. Raja was on-duty but not in uniform.

Jones had a concealed weapons permit. He and Raja pulled their guns and Raja shot Jones.

The statement from Jones’ family says they want to make sure a similar shooting never happens again.

The department fired Raja after the shooting. Jones was black while Raja is of South Asian ancestry.

Prosecutors are expected to announce whether they will file charges against a police officer for the fatal shooting of a legally armed man who was awaiting a tow truck.

Palm Beach County prosecutors will make an announcement at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday regarding the shooting of musician Corey Jones by former Palm Beach Gardens officer Nouman Raja.
