Flood-decimated docks in Lake Country getting much-needed repairs
LAKE COUNTRY – While several Lake Country docks are finally being repaired after flood damage, one summertime wharf could be headed for the scrapyard.
In 2017, spring flooding greatly damaged three public docks on the Okanagan Centre shoreline. The District of Lake Country has collected enough money to repair two of the docks and they're working to secure funding for the third.
According to a press release, the provincial government is providing disaster relief funding for the repairs on the dock north of Pebble Beach and the dock south of the Okanagan Centre Safe Harbour regional park. Work starts this week and the expected end date is July 26.
The District is working with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development to gain approval for the replacement of the public dock at the Waterside Park.
Other areas aren't so lucky. The ministry told the District they need to either remove the dock stationed north of Camp Road or bring it up to code. The District is exploring its options with the dock before making its final decision.
Karen Miller, communications officer with the District, said the repairs are expected to be finished just in time for the August long weekend, depending on weather conditions.
