Mulcair says federal New Democrats shocked by post-election violence in Quebec

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Federal New Democrats are reacting with shock to the tragic attack that marred the separatist Parti Quebecois’ return to power in Quebec.

The Quebec-dominated NDP caucus has opened its annual summer retreat with a moment of silence for the two victims who were shot, one fatally.

Leader Tom Mulcair says New Democrats are all in shock.

Toronto MP Olivia Chow says she can’t believe someone would react to an election outcome with violence.

The shootings occurred just outside the hall where PQ Leader Pauline Marois was delivering her victory speech.

A 62-year-old man, dressed in what appeared to be a bathrobe, shouted in French that “the English are waking up” as he was taken away by police.
