No surprises yet: Republican, Democratic incumbents win re-election

WASHINGTON – Democratic and Republican Senate incumbents are holding onto their seats so far on a night when the Republican hopes to take control of the Senate.

Republicans picked up one seat early in the evening in West Virginia, out of the six they need for a Senate majority.

Mississippi Republican Thad Cochran won a seventh Senate term after surviving a bitter primary fight with a tea party-backed candidate.

Republicans also won contests in Alabama, Maine, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The Republicans won twice in Oklahoma, where both Senate seats were on the ballot because of the pending resignation of Tom Coburn.

Alabama Republican Jeff Sessions was unopposed for a fourth term.

Democrats retained seats in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
