Democrat elected Pennsylvania governor, sends Republican incumbent to historic defeat

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Businessman Tom Wolf has been elected Pennsylvania governor after spending $10 million of his own money on a powerful TV ad campaign that helped send Republican Gov. Tom Corbett to a historic defeat.

With Tuesday’s victory, the 65-year-old Democrat will be Pennsylvania’s 47th governor and the first since 1979 never to have held elective office. Corbett is the first incumbent to lose in the four decades since Pennsylvania’s chief executive was allowed to run again.

A folksy ad campaign launched in January seemed to give Wolf a head start that proved overwhelming to the Republican governor, who was deeply unpopular after stumbling through his first term.

In the ads, Wolf presented himself to voters as a Jeep-driving Ph.D. who shared profits with the employees at his York-based furniture business.
