PQ election victory means change, not separation, Harper tells business leaders

VANCOUVER – Stephen Harper says the Parti Quebecois election victory means Quebecers voted for change but not for separating from Canada.

Harper says there’s no other way for the people of Quebec or the Parti Quebecois to interpret the result.

The prime minister is making his first public remarks since Parti Quebecois premier-elect Pauline Marois eked out her narrow minority election win on Tuesday.

He’s addressing an elite business gathering in Vancouver before jetting off to the Pacific coast of Russia for the APEC leaders summit.

Marois has vowed to demand control over employment insurance and more power over foreign aid, culture and social programs.

Senior Tories suggest that efforts will be made to find common ground between Quebec City and Ottawa.
