TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (12,139.73 up 149.60points):
Petaquilla Minerals Ltd. (TSX:PTQ). Miner. Up 23 cents, or 65.71 per cent, 58 cents on 22,513,030 shares. The copper and gold miner’s shares closed to its highest level since March on news Inmet Mining Corp. (TSX:IMN) made a $112 million bid for Petaquilla.
Yellow Media (TSX:YLO). Directory publisher. Up 1.5 cents, or 21.43 per cent, at 8.5 cents on 13,005,033 shares. A majority of debtholders and shareholders have approved a controversial plan to reduce the company’s $1.8-billion debt. The move, which will be in place by the end of this month, will help the directory publisher transform into a digital company.
SanGold Corp. (TSX:SGR). Miner. Up seven cents, or 9.33 per cent, at 82 cents on 7,915,543 shares. The gold sector rose 1.91 per cent to 321.73 points, as price of the bullion’s December contract jumped US$11.60 to $1,705.60 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Elgin Mining Inc. (TSX:ELG). Miner. Up four cents, or 8.70 per cent, at 50 cents on 5,892,572 shares. The metals and mining sector led the advancers on the main index, rising 2.97 per cent to 851.22 points.
Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Train and plane maker. Up 13 cent,s or 3.85 per cent, at $3.51 on 5,773,495 shares. Bombardier Aerospace delivered a Global 6000 to the U.S. Air Force. The plane has a list price of more than US$58.5 million.
Perseus Mining Ltd. (TSX:PRU). Miner. Up six cents, or 2.31 per cent, at $2.66 on 5,608,414 shares.
TSX Venture Exchange (1,258.30 up 12.03 points):
Bitterroot Resources Ltd. (TSXV:BTT). Up 2.5 cents, or 33.33 per cent, at 10 cent son 6,719,157 shares.
Northquest Ltd. (TSXV:NQ). Mineral explorer/developer. Up 34 cents, or 100 per cent, at 68 cents on 4,756,150 shares. The Toronto-based company said it has completed about half of its planned drilling program at the Pistol Bay Gold Project in Nunavut.
Companies reporting major news:
Transcontinental Inc. (TSX:TCL.A). Printer. Down 65 cents, or 7.03 per cent, at $8.60 on 529,426 shares. Third quarter profits dropped 75 per cent to $8.1 million as soft national advertising outside Quebec, lower educational book sales and costs related to company’s acquisition of Quad/Graphics Canada hurt the bottom line. Revenues increased to $517 million from $479.4 million.
Viterra Inc. (TSX:VT). Grain handler. Unchanged at $16.14 on 178,919 shares. The Calgary-based company booked third-quarter profits of $111 million or 30 cents per share versus year-ago earnings $123 million or 34 cents per share. Revenue totalled $2.21 billion, up from $2.18 billion.
