CARTAGENA, Colombia – A plaque honouring 18th century British seamen is gone just a week after it was inaugurated by Prince Charles.
Cartegena Mayor Dionisio Velez took part in the unveiling ceremony last week, but later backtracked after nationalistic anger over a monument recalling the “valour and suffering” of British forces who died while trying to capture the Spanish-held city.
Some were galled that it was placed near a statue of the Colombian hero who beat back the attack.
On Friday, the plaque was gone.
